Woods Valley Ranch

Woods Valley Ranch Biological Open Space Preserve (Preserve) lies approximately 6.5 miles north of the City of Escondido and about 6.0 miles east of Interstate 15 in unincorporated San Diego County. The Preserve consists of 115.87 acres and is comprised of approximately 41.04 acres of steep, predominantly southwest facing slope on the north side of Moosa Creek Valley and 74.83 acres of valley bottom north of Woods Valley Road. This area has been identified as a component of an important regional corridor along Moosa Creek within the Draft North County Multiple Species Conservation Wood Valley viewProgram (NCMSCP) Subarea Plan and is part of a larger dedicated open space easement consisting of 279.83 acres that is managed by the Woods Valley Homeowners Association. San Diego Habitat Conservancy (SDHC) commenced active management of the majority of the Preserve in February 2009, and began managing the remaining 17-acre wetlands portion after restoration was completed in 2011.

History: This open space preserve was required to be set aside as mitigation for the Woods Valley Ranch Golf Course. As part of the mitigation requirements, revegetation of oak riparian and open water habitats was required.

Habitat: The Preserve consists 51 acres of Diegan coastal sage scrub, 44.01 acres of live oak forest, 12.66 acres of southern riparian forest, 6.75 acres of non-native grassland, 4.09 acres of live oak woodland, 1.46 acres of open waters (includes freshwater marsh), 0.53 acre of southern coast live oak riparian forest, and 0.41 acre of unvegetated streambed.

Management Duties: SDHC monitors the Preserve on a quarterly basis to observe and document substantial changes in the habitat composition and the need for remedial measures. Non-native, invasive plant species are removed as necessary. Annual outreach is performed with the Woods Valley Ranch Home Owner’s Association.  SDHC specifically surveys for Engelmann oak every five years, although the general health of these trees is assessed during the quarterly monitoring patrols.

Species of Special Interest: Engelmann oak, Cooper’s hawk, Nuttall’s woodpecker, oak titmouse, rufous-crowned sparrow, yellow warbler, yellow-breasted chat, orange throated whiptail.
